Punjab Seeks Rs3bn to Strengthen River and Canal Embankments

The Punjab Irrigation Department has prepared a comprehensive plan to strengthen river and canal embankments across Punjab and has sought Rs3 billion from the government for stone procurement. Officials said the funds will be used to reinforce canal banks and protective bunds to withstand flood pressure and reduce risks during monsoon seasons. Under the plan, the Lahore Zone will receive Rs2.26 billion, while significant allocations include Rs2.20 billion for stone purchases overall, Rs750 million for Dera Ghazi Khan, and Rs400 million for Sargodha. Additional funds have been earmarked for Multan, Bahawalpur, and Sahiwal, with allocations also planned for Faisalabad and Potohar. Authorities say the initiative will enable timely repairs and significantly mitigate flood-related damage.
