Government raises petrol levy by Rs24, limits public relief

Islamabad: The federal government has increased the petroleum levy on petrol by Rs24.74 per liter, raising it from Rs91.34 to Rs116.08 per liter. The move comes alongside a Rs4 per liter reduction in petrol prices, which critics say prevented consumers from receiving the full benefit of declining international oil prices. Meanwhile, the levy on high-speed diesel has been reduced from Rs68.93 to Rs44.59 per liter. The government has also increased kerosene oil prices by Rs8.70 per liter. The decision highlights the government’s balancing act between providing public relief and maintaining revenue collection. Could continued reliance on petroleum levies become a key challenge for fuel affordability and inflation control?
