Lahore: A major sinkhole has appeared on the newly built Structure Plan Road in Johar Town, triggering questions about infrastructure coordination and post-construction safety. The 1.5-kilometre road connects Shadiwal Chowk with Wapda Town Roundabout and Ghaffar Chowk, and had reportedly been completed around four months ago at a cost of about Rs455.9 million.
According to public reports, LDA officials said the road itself did not collapse, but the surface caved in after the crown of a 20-foot-deep sewerage pipeline linked to PIA Housing Society failed beneath the road. The authority has also reportedly directed its Engineering Wing to recover around Rs4.1 million from the society.
A separate position shared by the WASA Lahore spokesperson says the affected road section falls within a private society’s limits, and the damaged sewerage connection is not under WASA Lahore’s jurisdiction. The spokesperson said the contractor of the private society had started repair work at the affected site.
Residents have meanwhile called for a transparent inquiry to determine responsibility and ensure that similar failures do not emerge on recently developed roads.
