Weather Department Issues Rainfall Forecast for December and January

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that below-normal rainfall during December and early January may significantly reduce soil moisture, posing risks to Rabi crops. In its three-month climate outlook, PMD stated that rain-fed agricultural regions—particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan—are likely to experience increased stress due to the prolonged dry spell. The department also cautioned that higher-than-usual temperatures could raise the chances of pest attacks, adding further challenges for farmers. However, PMD expects conditions to gradually improve by late January and February, with the likelihood of better rainfall. This shift may help reduce smog and fog, replenish water reserves, and restore soil moisture. Farmers and authorities have been urged to take timely measures to minimise potential crop losses.
