Islamabad: In a landmark decision, Pakistan’s Supreme Court restored the inheritance rights of a widow and her two daughters after a 71-year legal struggle. The court ruled that women cannot be deprived of their lawful inheritance based on an unproven oral gift, overturning earlier judgments by lower courts. It emphasized that old revenue records or long-term possession alone cannot override women’s legal and Islamic inheritance rights. The judgment also directed authorities to correct land records and ensure proper distribution of the property, reinforcing constitutional equality, justice, and protection of female heirs’ rights.
