Rs5.7 trillion stuck in 50,732 FBR tax cases

Islamabad: Around Rs5.7 trillion in revenue remains trapped in 50,732 tax disputes involving the Federal Board of Revenue, currently pending before courts and tribunals. Officials believe that faster resolution of these cases could significantly improve government revenue collection, reduce legal uncertainty for taxpayers, and strengthen fiscal management. The backlog also highlights pressure on Pakistan’s tax administration system, where delayed decisions can affect budget planning, public spending, and investor confidence. For the real estate and business sectors, unresolved tax disputes create uncertainty around compliance, transactions, and future investment decisions. If these cases are settled faster, the government could unlock major revenue without imposing new taxes. Could faster tax justice become a key step toward economic stability?
