Punjab cuts traffic fines and removes jail penalties

Lahore: Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan has signed the Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill 2026, ending jail penalties for traffic violations and reducing several fines by up to 90 percent across the province. The earlier 2025 ordinance has been cancelled, giving major relief to motorcyclists, rickshaw drivers, transporters and ordinary citizens. Under the new law, fines for driving without a license, wrong-way driving, vehicle fitness violations, overloading and carrying passengers on rooftops have been sharply reduced. The move aims to ease financial pressure on daily wage drivers and citizens facing inflation. Lower transport penalties may support mobility, logistics and business activity, while safer enforcement remains critical. Will this balance public relief with road discipline?
