Karachi’s unplanned growth strains drainage and waste system

Karachi: Environmental experts and civil society groups have raised serious concerns over unplanned construction and unchecked concrete expansion in Karachi, warning that the city’s drainage and waste management systems are coming under growing pressure. According to experts, shrinking green spaces and poorly regulated urban growth are worsening garbage disposal problems, increasing public health risks, and intensifying urban heat conditions, especially in low-income neighborhoods. They stressed that without integrated urban planning, protection of open spaces, and a modern solid waste management system, Karachi may face deeper infrastructure stress in the coming years. Analysts say sustainable development policies, stricter checks on illegal construction, and climate-sensitive planning are now essential to protect the city’s environment, public health, and long-term livability.
