Two New Dams Approved for Islamabad and Rawalpindi

Authorities have approved two major water supply projects to address growing water shortages in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, with completion targeted for December 2027. The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Raza Naqvi, attended by officials from WAPDA, the Capital Development Authority, and the Punjab government. Under the plan, the Dotara Dam will be constructed upstream of Khanpur Dam to supply 72 million gallons per day at an estimated cost of Rs40 billion, while the Shahdara Dam in the Margalla Hills will provide 10 million gallons per day at a cost of Rs4 billion. Authorities have directed early completion of feasibility studies and immediate construction thereafter.
