Lahore: Punjab has set a two-month target to make 1,886 new water filtration plants operational across the province under the clean drinking water programme. The latest progress was reviewed in a meeting chaired by Punjab Housing and Urban Development Minister Bilal Yasin, where officials were directed to strengthen monitoring, maintenance and regular water-quality checks.
According to the latest briefing, 1,082 filtration plants are planned for Rawalpindi Division and 800 for South Punjab. Lahore has also upgraded the façades of 650 older filtration plants, while another 2,000 new plants are planned for other districts next year.
The 1,886 figure is not a completely new programme announcement. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif had already directed authorities on August 6 to complete all 1,886 filtration-plant projects across Punjab as early as possible. The latest development adds a more specific two-month activation target.
Punjab’s wider clean-water programme is substantially larger: official APP reporting says the province is working toward more than 5,600 filtration plants, along with digital geo-tagging and the 1336 public complaints helpline.
