Punjab plans local body elections in October

Muhammad Muzamil Awan : Lahore: The Punjab government has made an in-principle decision to hold local body elections in October under the Local Bodies Amendment Bill 2025. The decision was discussed in a meeting chaired by Punjab Local Government Minister Mian Zeeshan Rafique, where preparations for holding elections this year were reviewed. The minister also briefed Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on arrangements and facilities for local representatives. The elections are expected to be held on a party basis, with major political parties preparing for local-level competition. This decision matters because elected local governments directly influence municipal services, road maintenance, sanitation, planning approvals, development priorities, and neighborhood-level infrastructure. Strong local bodies can improve civic delivery and real estate confidence. Can these elections strengthen grassroots governance in Punjab?
