Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the expansion of the electric bus service to the tehsil level, with 1,500 electric buses planned for 91 tehsils from January 2027. Dedicated electric-bus depots have also been approved for every tehsil covered by the programme.
The first batch for the tehsil-level service is expected to arrive in Lahore in January 2027. The provincial government has set a wider target of having 3,000 electric buses operational across Punjab by June 2027.
According to the latest briefing, 612 electric buses are already fully operational in different districts, while another 192 buses are expected to become operational shortly in Multan and other areas. The government has separately set a target to complete the current first phase by the end of September 2026.
The tehsil-level expansion represents a major step beyond the earlier district-level rollout. In April, the Punjab government had asked for a plan to deploy 1,500 buses at tehsil level; the September decision now formally approves that expansion.
