PM Shehbaz Sharif Launches Scheme to Give 500,000 Chromebooks to Students

Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif formally launched the Prime Minister’s Youth Chromebook Scheme on October 25, 2026, announcing plans to distribute 500,000 Chromebooks to deserving and high-achieving students across Pakistan within two years.

Addressing the launching ceremony in Islamabad, the prime minister said the devices would be distributed on merit, with educational opportunities available to talented students regardless of their financial background. Students from mainstream schools and registered religious seminaries are among the intended beneficiaries.

The initiative also includes portable internet devices, commonly known as MiFi, to help students attend online classes, access digital libraries and continue learning from home. Reports indicate that the programme involves refurbished Chromebooks, while some students received devices during the inaugural ceremony.

The prime minister thanked Rashid Minhas of the Tokyo Technology Care Foundation for supporting the initiative. He said modern technology should be available to capable students across Pakistan so that financial limitations do not prevent them from developing their skills.

Although the prime minister announced a two-year distribution target, separate reporting based on education ministry officials describes a three-year implementation plan. The government has launched the programme, but the full nationwide distribution remains to be completed.
