Lahore speeds up drain desilting and underground tanks to prevent urban flooding

Lahore: Commissioner Lahore Numan Yousaf visited key drainage and underground water tank sites across the city along with MD WASA to review monsoon preparedness and flood prevention work. The inspection covered Shadman Drain, Barkat Market water tank, Garden Town, Qaddafi Stadium water tank, and Sattukatla Drain, where officials briefed him on ongoing desilting operations and construction progress. MD WASA Ghufran Ahmad said drains were cleaned in phases before monsoon, while cleaning will continue throughout the rainy season. The commissioner directed teams to focus on low-lying areas, keep under-construction water tank sites closed to public entry, and ensure quick drainage during rain emergencies. Can these measures reduce Lahore’s urban flooding risk?
