Islamabad: The first phase of the long-delayed Islamabad Model Jail in Sector H-16 has been completed and is ready for inauguration, according to the Capital Development Authority. The completed phase includes three barracks with capacity for around 1,500 inmates, a 35-bed hospital and other essential facilities. Landscaping and final preparations are now being completed ahead of the opening. Dawn
The first phase has cost around Rs7 billion, including expenditure incurred before the project was transferred to CDA. The jail was approved in 2016 at an estimated Rs3.9 billion and was originally scheduled for completion in 2019, but funding shortages and other issues caused repeated delays. DawnOnce operational, Islamabad authorities will be able to house prisoners linked to cases registered in the federal capital within the city instead of relying mainly on Adiala Jail in Punjab, which has faced capacity pressure. The government had already directed in September 2026 that all remaining construction and administrative work be completed before the planned October inauguration.
