Karachi: A major wastewater treatment and recycling scheme known as TP-IV is being developed to intercept sewage flowing through the Malir basin, treat it and reuse part of the treated water for Karachi’s industries instead of allowing untreated wastewater to continue reaching the Arabian Sea. The project is being developed by the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) under a public-private partnership framework.
According to the Sindh PPP Unit’s latest project description, the proposed system includes an interceptor network designed for roughly 300 MGD, a 135 MGD wastewater treatment plant and a 44 MGD recycling facility. Recycled industrial-grade water is planned for industries in the Korangi Industrial Area and Korangi Creek Industrial Park, reducing their dependence on freshwater.
However, an important clarification is required: physical construction of TP-IV has not yet begun. The Sindh PPP Unit currently lists the project at the feasibility stage, while a 2026 KWSSIP progress report says the component had not yet entered implementation and its environmental studies were being updated following changes in project scope.
Earlier KWSSIP and international financing documents describe a slightly different configuration — a 21.7-km interceptor, 120 MGD treatment capacity and 50 MGD recycling plant. The variation reflects evolving project design and financing structures, so these older figures should not be presented as the final current design without qualification.
