Health authorities have confirmed that 120 people tested positive for HIV during a large-scale screening campaign conducted in Karachi’s SITE area near Kulsum Bai Valika Hospital. More than 10,500 residents were screened as part of an expanded public health response after concerns emerged over possible local transmission.
Preliminary investigations indicate that unsafe medical practices, including the alleged reuse of contaminated syringes, may have contributed to the spread of infections. Authorities have launched a detailed inquiry, expanded testing, and intensified awareness campaigns to identify additional cases and prevent further transmission.
Officials have urged residents to seek timely HIV screening if they believe they may have been exposed and emphasized the importance of using only safe, sterilized medical equipment at healthcare facilities.
