Rawalpindi: Construction of two underpasses worth about Rs8 billion is scheduled to begin on September 7, 2026, at Race Course Park and Charing Cross on Peshawar Road. The Punjab Communication and Works Department is overseeing the project, while Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) has been awarded the construction contract.
Preparatory work has already been completed. Utility services — including electricity infrastructure, water lines, telephone and cable networks — have been shifted, while alternate service roads have been built so Peshawar Road does not need to be completely closed during construction. Traffic will be diverted onto these service roads once main work starts.
The plan originally included three underpasses at Race Course Park, Army Graveyard and Charing Cross, but authorities later revised it to two. The Army Graveyard location will instead receive an at-grade road.
The two projects form part of a wider 25-kilometre signal-free corridor from Islamabad Expressway to Motorway Chowk. Authorities say the completed corridor is intended to reduce travel time between the two points to approximately 15–20 minutes. The two underpasses are expected to take around two to three months, with authorities targeting completion before the end of 2026.
