Punjab Launches Plan to Underground Power Cables in Lahore

LAHORE: The Punjab government has launched a comprehensive plan to remove hazardous overhead power lines and shift electricity cables underground, starting with Lahore in the first phase. The initiative aims to prevent short-circuit incidents and fatal accidents, particularly during rains and festive seasons. A pilot project will begin in the inner city to eliminate dangerous hanging wires, while Lahore will be divided into three zones for phased underground cabling. Authorities have also decided that all new housing schemes must ensure underground electricity supply. During a special meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, LESCO officials informed that Lahore currently has around 40,000 kilometers of power lines and 50,000 kilometers of internet cables. The chief minister directed departments to ensure uninterrupted alternative services during execution and ordered an emergency safety plan to avoid tragedies.
