Peshawar: Security has been tightened in the provincial capital amid escalating political tensions and discussions over the possible imposition of governor’s rule or an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Reports of container barricades and road closures around Peshawar’s Red Zone have raised concerns about access to major parts of the city.
According to the road-closure information received, restrictions have been reported around Firdous Bazaar, sections of GT Road, Peshawar–Charsadda Road, Tehkal, University Road and routes leading towards Peshawar Cantonment. However, the complete closure status of these individual locations has not been independently confirmed through a current official city traffic advisory.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has convened a federal cabinet meeting on October 11 to discuss constitutional options concerning Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. KP Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed has also issued security instructions for handling possible protests, directing district police to protect important roads, government buildings and sensitive locations.
The situation comes as PTI’s long march, led by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, continues amid growing differences between the federal and provincial governments. Although emergency and governor’s rule options are under consideration, no final official proclamation imposing either measure has been verified.
