Karachi to regulate roadside hotels through digital permits and barcode system

Karachi: A transparent digital framework is being introduced to regulate roadside hotels and food businesses across the city. Under the new system, permissions will be processed online, while barcode-based permits will help identify legitimate operators and improve monitoring. The initiative will be supervised by the district administration and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation in line with court orders. Officials say strict enforcement of anti-encroachment SOPs will protect public spaces, support lawful businesses, and help create a cleaner and more organized urban environment. The framework can also reduce illegal occupation of roads and footpaths, improve pedestrian movement, and strengthen commercial discipline. Can digital permits bring better order to Karachi’s roadside food economy?
