KARACHI: Industrialists and financial leaders in Karachi have proposed a not-for-profit solar power framework aimed at diverting surplus solar electricity to low-income and deserving households. The proposed model, called the Social Net-Metering Unit Donation Framework (SNUDA), would allow excess power generated from industrial and commercial rooftops to be donated through the existing net-metering system. Proponents say the initiative could reduce the government’s subsidy burden, ease pressure on industrial electricity tariffs, and improve recoveries for power distribution companies. Supporters believe the framework aligns clean energy adoption with social welfare and energy equity at a time of rising power costs.
