Dubai: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed 40% of its LED lighting replacement project across Dubai Metro stations and facilities. Under the initiative, 17,880 conventional lighting units have been replaced with energy-efficient LED lights out of a planned total of 44,700.
According to RTA’s latest update on October 27, 2026, the project is being implemented in partnership with Keolis MHI, which operates and maintains Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram. The upgrade aims to reduce electricity consumption, maintenance expenses and carbon emissions while improving lighting reliability for passengers.
The first two phases covered pedestrian bridges and passenger and operational areas at Red and Green Line stations. Work is now progressing on the third phase, which includes car parks, tunnels, additional buildings and power distribution facilities.
RTA says the new LED units can operate for up to 11 years under continuous use, compared with approximately one year for conventional lights. This longer lifespan is expected to reduce repeated replacements and the time required for maintenance.
The authority is targeting project completion in 2027. Once fully implemented, the upgraded lighting system is expected to save more than 14 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. These are projected savings following completion, not electricity reductions already achieved across the entire programme.
