Dubai: Al Maktoum International Airport is set to get what Mitsubishi Heavy Industries describes as the world’s largest airport Automated People Mover system, spanning approximately 50 kilometres and connecting nine stations. Dubai Aviation City Corporation has awarded the Phase 1 contract to a consortium of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, its Dubai subsidiary MHI-MESC and Larsen & Toubro. The network will use 165 automated vehicles to move passengers between terminals and major airport facilities, with completion scheduled for December 2031. Dubai’s government says the first phase of the expanded airport is targeted to begin operations in 2032. Once fully developed, Al Maktoum International is planned to handle more than 260 million passengers annually.
