Sharjah: Authorities have temporarily closed Al Hamriyah Beach following an oil spill from a maritime tanker near the coast of Umm Al Quwain. The Sharjah Government Media Bureau announced the precautionary closure on October 23, 2026, to protect beachgoers and prevent oil pollution from reaching the shoreline.
Specialised teams are monitoring the coastal area and taking preventive measures to protect the beach and surrounding marine environment. Authorities have urged fishermen, swimmers and visitors to follow official safety instructions and avoid entering restricted areas.
The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment confirmed that the tanker oil spill had affected the shores of Umm Al Quwain, where beaches and coastal areas were also temporarily closed. Containment, cleanup and environmental assessment operations are underway to limit the damage and determine when affected locations can safely reopen.
The incident has also led to precautionary beach closures in Ras Al Khaimah, where authorities announced restrictions on October 24. Although residents reported unusual odours in Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain, the ministry said these odours did not pose a health risk. No confirmed reopening date for Al Hamriyah Beach has been announced.
