Lahore: Construction is continuing on the Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cancer Treatment and Research, which the Punjab government describes as Pakistan’s largest public-sector cancer hospital. Punjab Health Secretary Azmat Mahmood said on August 19 that the project is being built at an estimated cost of around Rs75 billion and work is continuing day and night. Current technical government material describes the institute as a 915-bed facility, designed for comprehensive cancer treatment and research. The hospital is planned to provide treatment for advanced cancers, including level-three and level-four cases. Earlier progress data in April showed the main hospital building at 55% completion, with the cancer care clinic at 89%, while medical-equipment procurement had also started.
