Govt Allocates Rs700m to Revive Karachi’s Historic Markets

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has launched major urban development projects worth over Rs700 million to rehabilitate Karachi’s historic Old City markets. Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab laid the foundation stone, formally initiating the revamp. The largest project, valued at Rs595.6 million, will focus on Jodia Bazaar, Bolton Market, Mithadar, and Kharadar. An additional Rs100 million has been allocated for the restoration of the historic Lea Market building, targeted for completion within 90 days. The project includes large-scale road construction, paver block installation, and a complete sewerage system overhaul. Authorities say the initiative will restore commercial activity, improve infrastructure, and protect heritage zones through coordinated municipal planning.
