The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution urging the federal government to grant the region provisional provincial status along with constitutional and political rights. The resolution was presented by lawmaker Jalal Ali Shah and received support from both treasury and opposition members. It also called for Gilgit-Baltistan to receive representation in the National Assembly, Senate and key federal financial institutions.
However, the resolution itself does not make Gilgit-Baltistan Pakistan’s fifth constitutional province. Such a change would require action by the federal government and constitutional amendments approved by Parliament. A similar unanimous resolution demanding provisional provincial status was also passed by the regional assembly in March 2021.
