China has officially approved the construction of the Bohai Strait Tunnel, set to become the world’s longest undersea tunnel, dramatically reducing travel time between Dalian and Yantai from nearly six hours to just 40 minutes. The mega project will feature two parallel high-speed rail tunnels, allowing trains to travel at speeds exceeding 150 miles per hour. The tunnel’s total length is expected to reach 75–76 miles, with approximately 56 miles beneath the seabed, surpassing both the Channel Tunnel and Japan’s Seikan Tunnel.Construction is estimated to take 10 to 15 years, with advanced safety systems including seismic monitoring, emergency exits, waterproofing, and ventilation due to the region’s earthquake risk. Once completed, the tunnel is expected to significantly boost regional trade, connectivity, and economic growth.
