Work has begun on the 65 million gallons per day (MGD) expansion phase of the TP-1 sewage treatment plant at Haroonabad, Karachi, following the reported completion of its 35 MGD secondary-treatment facility.
Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab said the target is to complete the new 65 MGD phase by December 31, 2026. Once this additional capacity is completed, TP-1 is intended to reach a combined treatment capacity of 100 MGD.
The expansion is consistent with the timeline outlined by the mayor in July, when he said an initial 35 MGD capacity was being brought online and another 65 MGD was planned by December.
TP-1 is located at Haroonabad in Karachi’s Keamari area and forms part of the city’s wastewater-treatment infrastructure. The project is designed to reduce untreated sewage discharge while creating opportunities to reuse treated wastewater, particularly for industrial purposes.
