Pakistan Railways Launches Major Digital Upgrades This Year

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways has launched Phase-I of its Railway Advanced Infrastructure Network (RAIN) Project, with completion targeted for June 2026. The plan, presented during a meeting chaired by Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi, will be fully funded through the department’s own revenue. Phase-I includes GPS tracking for all trains and locomotives, development of smart and secure stations in major cities based on the Rawalpindi model, and high-speed internet at selected stations. The project also covers command and control centers at Lahore headquarters and divisional offices, fiberization of 1,700 kilometers of the ML-1 network, and real-time monitoring systems. Officials said the upgrades will reduce delays and accidents, improve passenger services, and enhance operational efficiency.
