Punjab directs province-wide shift to digital payments, QR codes mandatory

Lahore: The Punjab government has directed a province-wide transition from cash transactions to digital payments, making QR code systems mandatory for businesses, retailers and petrol pumps. According to official instructions, all commercial outlets must display QR codes and facilitate payments through direct digital channels. Deputy Commissioners across Punjab have been instructed to ensure immediate implementation and compliance. Authorities said the move aims to promote financial transparency, reduce undocumented cash transactions and strengthen the digital economy. Officials added that digital payment enforcement at petrol pumps is being prioritised to expand formal financial inclusion and improve transaction monitoring across major commercial sectors in the province.
