Islamabad: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has announced that construction has begun on the Rs12 billion modernization of the Gadani shipbreaking yard. The project includes a 30-bed hospital, workers’ colony, school, solar power infrastructure and 32 kilometres of internal roads. A public park, hazardous and industrial waste-treatment systems, fire and rescue stations, and dedicated water-treatment facilities will also be developed. According to the government, the project has entered its active procurement and construction phase, supported by a Rs780 million allocation under the 2026–27 federal Public Sector Development Programme. The upgrade aims to improve worker safety, protect the environment and align Gadani’s ship-recycling operations with the Hong Kong Convention. Government of Pakistan Press Information Department
