Lahore: Punjab has expanded Lahore’s anti-littering enforcement by using Safe City cameras to detect cleanliness violations and generate digital challans. During a September 29 review of the Suthra Punjab programme, officials told Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif that 2,156 digital challans had already been generated in Lahore with the help of Safe City cameras. The city’s anti-littering e-challan system originally launched on September 1 as a pilot covering around 200 commercial markets and major roads, including The Mall, Jail Road and Ferozepur Road. September was treated as an awareness and warning period, while formal financial penalties were scheduled to begin from October 1. Dawn
Safe City technology can already identify vehicle number plates through automated surveillance systems. Under the new cleanliness drive, the same network is being used to help identify littering linked to vehicles and public spaces. PSCA
However, the 2,156 figure should not automatically be described as 2,156 paid fines. The official briefing calls them digital challans, while September was still the grace period. A separate official count confirming how many monetary fines have actually been paid since October 1 was not found.
