Karachi: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation is carrying out restoration work at the historic Lea Market, one of the old commercial landmarks associated with Karachi’s Old City and Lyari. KMC allocated around Rs100 million for the market’s restoration, with the stated aim of preserving its original architectural character while improving facilities for traders and visitors.
Lea Market was built in 1927 and historically served as an important trading centre connecting Lyari and the old commercial areas of Karachi. Its original complex consisted of market buildings around a central courtyard with a clock tower and separate sections for meat, vegetables, dairy and fish.
In April 2026, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab inspected restoration work at Lea Market along with other historic markets and directed officials to preserve the original appearance while adding modern civic facilities. The initial completion target was June 30, but later updates in July showed that restoration and excavation work was still continuing.
During excavation in July, two old-style statues were discovered at the site. The artefacts were moved to a secure location and archaeology experts were asked to determine their age and historical importance. KMC said excavation would continue carefully to avoid damaging any further heritage material.
