Karachi to introduce AI-powered smart traffic signal system

Karachi: Pakistan’s largest city is set to undergo a major urban mobility transformation with the planned rollout of AI-powered smart traffic signal systems. Officials stated that the initiative aims to tackle severe traffic congestion, which causes massive economic losses due to fuel wastage and delays. Authorities highlighted that the system will use real-time traffic monitoring, adaptive signal timing and centralized control centers to manage traffic flow more efficiently. The project will initially cover major congested corridors including Shahrah-e-Faisal, Clifton, Saddar and Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Experts believe the system will improve travel time and emergency response by enabling priority movement for ambulances and fire vehicles. However, they stress that long-term improvement will also require mass transit expansion and better urban planning.
