Karachi Extends Rickshaw Ban to 26 Major Roads

Authorities in Karachi have expanded the existing ban on two- and four-seater rickshaws, adding six major roads to the previously restricted 20 routes as traffic congestion worsens across the city. Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi announced the extension after receiving a recommendation from DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah. The order, enforced under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, now applies to 26 major arteries, including Shahrah-e-Faisal. Officials say the measure aims to improve traffic flow and reduce gridlock. The restricted roads include II Chundrigar Road, Shahrah-e-Quaideen, Shahrah-e-Pakistan, University Road, Korangi Road, Orangi Road, Hub River Road, Rashid Minhas Road, and others spanning key commercial and residential corridors. The decision comes amid rising public frustration and severe congestion. In addition, the Sindh government has imposed a daytime ban on heavy vehicles and introduced a 30 km/h speed limit for HTVs to ease pressure on Karachi’s busiest routes.
