Islamabad: The city has installed 50 new rainwater recharge wells to capture and store rainwater instead of letting it flow away. According to the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), these wells collectively returned nearly 10 million gallons of rainwater to underground aquifers during the 2022 monsoon. The project aims to reduce urban flooding while restoring groundwater levels by channeling stormwater into specially designed recharge wells. Early results indicate higher groundwater tables and improved water availability in nearby areas. Experts note that such initiatives not only mitigate flood risks but also promote sustainable water management practices, essential for growing urban centers.
