Lahore: Punjab is moving ahead with a Rs31.592 billion surface-water project designed to reduce Lahore’s heavy dependence on groundwater. Under the plan, a treatment plant near Bhaini Road will draw water from the BRBD Canal and initially treat 54 million gallons per day (MGD) for drinking-water supply.
The project includes raw-water pipelines, pumping stations, sedimentation and filtration facilities, treated-water storage, chlorination, drainage infrastructure, a transmission main and related distribution works. The CDWP has cleared the revised PC-I and referred it to ECNEC for final consideration. WASA officials say physical execution will begin after that final approval.
The project is intended to gradually reduce pressure on Lahore’s aquifer, while shifting part of the city’s water supply toward treated surface water.
