The Local Government and Community Development Department is the main institution in charge of the planned development and regulation of local government systems in Punjab. It was formed to introduce a representative, accountable, and transparent local government structure to address community-level public issues. The department monitors the administration of civic municipal infrastructure, local resource collection, and public service delivery to promote sustainable community development.

LG&CD is also instrumental in the control of development standards, urban planning coordination, and the execution of digital governance initiatives throughout the province. These functionalities have enabled it to influence grass-roots level local administration, manage public properties, and improve civic facilities like sanitation, water systems, and local road networks. LG&CD operates with several specialized autonomous and attached bodies which plan, coordinate, and execute community projects. These include:

  • Directorate General of Local Government and Community Development
  • Punjab Local Government Board (PLGB)
  • Punjab Municipal Development Fund Company (PMDFC)
