Sahiwal: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced 14 additional electric buses for Sahiwal, expanding the city’s existing electric public-transport network. The announcement was made during a meeting in Lahore with MPAs from Sahiwal district, including Wilayat Shah, Qasim Nadeem, Arshad Malik, Nadeem Aslam Lodhi, Rana Riaz Ahmed and Muhammad Hanif.
Sahiwal’s electric bus service was originally launched with 16 buses operating in the first phase on four routes. The addition of another 14 buses is consistent with the government’s earlier plan to operate 30 electric buses in Sahiwal city. The first-phase service was designed to serve more than 25,000 passengers daily, with buses equipped with Wi-Fi, charging ports, CCTV and facilities for women and passengers with disabilities.
The expansion is also part of a much larger provincial transport programme. On September 9, the Punjab government decided to begin electric-bus services at tehsil level from January 2027, with 1,500 buses planned across 91 tehsils. The government has set a target of increasing Punjab’s electric-bus fleet to 3,000 by June 2027, while 87 buses have been allocated for four tehsils of Sahiwal Division under the new phase.
