Abu Dhabi: The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) and MIT Senseable City Lab are developing two AI-based research tools to better understand traffic emissions and pedestrians’ exposure to them across Abu Dhabi. The projects are called Exposure AI and Emission AI.
Exposure AI is designed to assess how much traffic-related pollution pedestrians encounter as they move through urban areas. Emission AI, meanwhile, analyses dashcam footage with artificial intelligence to estimate emissions from individual vehicles, giving planners a more detailed picture of pollution sources and exposure patterns.
There is an important status correction to the supplied post. Khaleej Times described Exposure AI as a newly launched real-time tool, but Abu Dhabi Media Office’s official September 30 announcement says both systems are still “proofs of concept” and are nearing completion. Therefore, it is safer to report them as AI tools under development/testing rather than a fully deployed citywide service.
The expanded DMT-MIT partnership was signed at LIVEX 2026 by Fatema Al Mutawa, Acting Executive Director of DMT’s Strategy Sector, and Carlo Ratti, Director of MIT Senseable City Lab. The collaboration also covers urban heat, mobility, AI-assisted tree planting and light-pollution research.
