Punjab Launches Satellite System to Monitor and Protect Forests

Punjab has launched a historic satellite-based monitoring system to protect forests across the province. Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced that advanced high-resolution satellites — including WorldView-3, SPOT 6-7, Pleiades, PRSS-1, Landsat, and Sentinel-2 — will now track forest cover and ecosystem changes in real time. The system will instantly detect illegal logging, land encroachment, and suspicious activity, allowing the Environmental Protection Force to respond immediately. For the first time, a complete digital inventory of all forests is being created. The technology will also identify areas suitable for new plantations, support wildlife protection, and improve early detection of forest fires. Officials say the system will curb land tampering, strengthen environmental governance, and safeguard Punjab’s natural resources for future generations
