Established in 1957 by presidential order, the KDA replaced the earlier Karachi Improvement Trust (KIT). Over the decades, it has developed numerous significant townships and areas, including Gulshan-e-Iqbal, North Nazimabad, and Shahrah-e-Faisal. The KDA’s control has shifted between local and provincial administration; it was merged into the City District Government Karachi in 2002 and later restored to its original position under the provincial Government of Sindh in 2011 and again in 2016 through the KDA Revival & Amending Act.
