Transformation of Shalimar Gardens

Walled City of Lahore

Conservation and Transformation of Shalimar Gardens is a heritage preservation project linked with the Walled City of Lahore Authority for protecting and improving one of Lahore’s most important Mughal garden landmarks. Shalimar Gardens were constructed by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1641–42 and are recognized by UNESCO as part of the “Fort and Shalamar Gardens in Lahore” World Heritage Site.

The project focuses on conservation of historic structures, restoration of damaged sections, improved visitor facilities and protection of the garden’s original Mughal character. Recent reporting states that WCLA completed conservation work on the eastern wall at a cost of Rs 14 million, while work on the main gate was in progress at a cost of Rs 7.5 million.

WCLA is carrying out conservation and transformation work at Shalimar Gardens with a focus on heritage protection, tourism improvement and long-term preservation of Lahore’s Mughal identity. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the project holds high cultural, architectural and tourism value for Lahore and Punjab.
