The Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme K IV

Water and Power Development Authority

The Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme K IV is a major water supply initiative designed to provide bulk water to the mega city of Karachi from Keenjhar Lake, located in Thatta District of Sindh Province. The project was initiated to address the long standing water shortage in Karachi and to ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply for its rapidly growing population.

The scheme has a total length of one hundred twenty one kilometers, including an intake channel of zero point six one kilometers. The infrastructure includes two pumping stations, three filtration plants and three storage lagoons. The scope of work covers design review, detailed engineering design, construction supervision and contract administration to ensure proper execution and long-term operational reliability of the system.

WAPDA awarded consultancy services in July 2021 to an international joint venture for design review, engineering and supervision. Eight contract packages have been awarded, with seven contractors already mobilized at site and preparatory works in progress. The final contract package has also received its letter of acceptance and notice to commence work.
