Restoration of Royal Kitchen Lahore

Walled City of Lahore

Conservation of Royal Kitchen Lahore Project is a heritage restoration project completed by the Walled City of Lahore Authority and Aga Khan Trust for Culture inside Lahore Fort. The Royal Kitchens are located behind the Alamgiri Gate and were constructed during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan for preparing food, drinks, sweets and appetizers for the royal court. The site was later damaged during the Sikh period and converted into food storage, stables, interrogation cells and jails during later occupations.

The on-ground conservation work started in 2015 and included photographic documentation, technical documentation, excavation, structural conservation, exposure of original ground levels, preservation of fresco work and restoration of hidden architectural elements. After conservation, the Royal Kitchens were revived as an important heritage site and cultural venue within Lahore Fort. The site was inaugurated by former Prime Minister Imran Khan on 4 May 2019.

WCLA completed the Conservation of Royal Kitchen Lahore Project with a focus on Mughal heritage preservation, adaptive reuse and cultural tourism. The project transformed a neglected and unsafe part of Lahore Fort into a restored historic venue now used for cultural and Sufi events, strengthening the fort’s visitor experience and heritage value.
