Pakistan Public Works Department (PWD)

Ministry of Housing & Works

Pakistan Public Works Department was a federal government organization operating under the Ministry of Housing and Works, responsible for planning, design, construction and maintenance of public sector buildings and infrastructure across Pakistan. The department played a central role in delivering government facilities for federal ministries, autonomous bodies and public institutions over several decades.

The scope of work of Pakistan Public Works Department included construction and maintenance of offices, residential buildings, hospitals, educational institutions, courts and other public infrastructure. It also carried out renovation, upgradation and repair works to ensure continued functionality and safety of government assets. Through standardized engineering practices, the department contributed significantly to the development of federal infrastructure nationwide.

In line with federal government reforms, Pakistan Public Works Department was officially dissolved, and its functions, assets and ongoing projects were redistributed among federal ministries, provincial governments and newly designated agencies. The dissolution was aimed at reducing administrative overlap, improving efficiency and devolving responsibilities closer to implementing authorities. Following dissolution, project execution and maintenance responsibilities were shifted to relevant departments at federal and provincial levels.
