The Identification and Establishment of 02 Sanitary Landfill Sites project is a major solid waste management initiative being undertaken in Punjab to develop a sustainable and environmentally compliant waste disposal system. The project covers two locations including approximately 150 acres of land near Town Lakhuwana in Faisalabad and about 65 acres of land near Town Bhakhrawali in Gujranwala. The initiative is sponsored and executed by the Local Government and Community Development Department with implementation support through Punjab Municipal Development Fund Company. The total project duration is 3 years with an estimated cost of PKR 4,499.95 million.

The project aims to establish modern sanitary landfill facilities to safely dispose of municipal solid waste collected from City and Sadar tehsils of Faisalabad and Gujranwala. Each landfill site will be integrated with a 500 tons per day Material Recovery Facility to ensure that all incoming waste is processed for segregation and recovery before final disposal. This integrated approach supports waste reduction, recycling and recovery of useful products while minimizing the volume of waste sent to landfill cells.

The proposed landfill sites will include engineered landfill cells, liner systems to prevent soil and groundwater contamination, leachate collection and treatment systems, gas collection systems for methane capture or flaring, and cover systems to control odor and rainwater infiltration. The project focuses on safe disposal of waste in compliance with environmental standards, recovery of resources such as compost and refuse derived fuel, and reduction of environmental impacts including groundwater pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The initiative represents a significant step toward modernizing municipal solid waste management practices in Punjab.
