The Greater Thal Canal Project is a major irrigation development designed to support agricultural production across several districts of Punjab. The canal off takes from the Chashma Jhelum Link Canal and serves the districts of Khushab, Bhakkar, Layyah and Jhang. The primary objective of the project is to provide reliable water supply for agriculture, leading to improved crop yields, economic growth and enhanced living conditions in the region.

The project contributes to improvements in the physical environment including atmosphere, climate, land and water resources. By supporting agricultural productivity, it also improves socio cultural and socio economic conditions for local communities. The canal is expected to deliver annual crop benefits valued at approximately five point five eight billion rupees, making it a significant contributor to the regional economy.

The main canal has a length of thirty five kilometers and a carrying capacity of eight thousand five hundred cusecs. The project includes three hundred forty four kilometers of branch canals, with Phase One covering sixty five kilometers. In addition, one thousand nine hundred ninety nine kilometers of distributaries and minors are part of the system, with Phase One covering four hundred kilometers. The total command area of the project is one million seven hundred thirty nine thousand acres, while Phase One covers three hundred fifty five thousand acres. Phase One of the Greater Thal Canal Project was completed in June 2009.
